REGISTERING WITH THE OPEN Y
TERMINAL HAPLOGROUP MATCHING SYSTEMThe Open Source Y-DNA Project is a compilation of the publicly-published data available from FTDNA and YFull. By definition, it's larger than either of them.* Conceptually, it was simple enough to achieve but not so simple in practice. My understanding is earlier attempts have failed. Indeed, there were a great many challenges, but they were well worth the effort. A new, complete, and often unique tree has been created and is refreshed daily. It's fully automated and requires no "manual" manipulation outside the algorithm that was written (and occasionally edited) to create it. More information about its development can be found at the article, The Open Source Y-DNA Project (Open Y). (It already needs revision.)

In my estimation, the Y chromosome is one of the most powerful tools for determining paternal ancestry. In fact, descent is locked into every Y chromosome within every cell of every man. It needs only to be extracted, processed, and interpreted. The latter is achieved through studies in genealogy, history, geography, archaeology, and history.
The Open Y database is purely a genetic tree. It's usefulness to genealogy comes by contacting and acquiring the family tree data from those who match your terminal haplogroup. In this way, it will work much like GEDmatch.
Although the haplogroup tree is complete, registration rolled out on 12 December 2025. There's no one yet to match with and the actual matching system is yet to be developed. We need registrants first!
You need not upload anything. The following form asks only for basic login information, email address, terminal haplogroup, Earliest Known Ancestor, and your private variants, if any.
More information will be diplayed once you've registered.
